How Using Ayurvedic Oils Can Help To Promote A Healthy Scalp & Even Healthier Natural Hair!

Listen to episode here:

Hi there! I have heard time and time again how Ayurveda helps maintain balance between the mind, body and soul. But did you know that Ayurveda can be the driving force to achieving healthy hair as well? Back in my earlier days of being natural, I was curious about Ayurveda for natural hair care and would often experiment with different oils and hair masks. While I typically loved the results, I fell off the bandwagon on the whole “DIY” approach, because I started just purchasing my products with some of the Ayurvedic ingredients already built in them. However, I wanted to bring to your attention the many beneficial oils that are considered Ayurvedic, so that you can be able to identify and incorporate them into your own hair routine if you’re struggling with growth and length retention.

Let’s Take A Look:

What is Ayurveda?- Ayurvedic medicine is one the worlds oldest healing systems. It originated in India around 3,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda is actually derived from the Sanskrit words Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge or science, according to Wikipedia. Ayurveda is based in the foundation that disease is due to an imbalance or stress on the persons consciousness. It encourages specific lifestyle practices and holistic approaches to therapy through the balance of mind, body, spirit and even the environment. So how does this relate to natural hair you ask? Well… you come to the right spot!

How does Ayurveda help to grow natural hair? Following an Ayurvedic regimen for our natural hair can significantly help in the reduction of shedding and breakage, while helping to promote added luster and shine. I even read that following an ayurvedic hair regimen can slow down premature greying. If you’re someone that is struggling with scalp issues, moisturizing your hair, hair loss due to alopecia, breakage and length retention, an Ayurvedic hair routine can help restore and nourish the hair and scalp back to it’s optimal health. I use an ayurvedic hair oil by Camille Rose Naturals that I apply to my scalp daily and my hair just loves it! I have also tried my hand at some of the DIY hair masks, which I did like.. but I don’t continue to do only because I don’t have the time to DIY much of anything when it comes to my hair products. Let’s take a look at some of the most beneficial ayurvedic hair oils!

Coconut Oil: Although Coconut Oil seems to get a very bad rap for some reason in the natural hair community, its actually jam packed with essential vitamins and nutrients that promote healthier, longer and thicker hair. Coconut oil has vitamins and fatty acids that are specifically able to penetrate the hairs cuticle layer. If your using Coconut oil, try to ensure that it’s extra virgin and cold pressed, as this is the purest form you can get it in and this is the best version for natural hair.

How to use: Apply to hair from root to tip and leave on for 20 minutes with heat. Wash out with moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Neem Oil: Known as the healer of all ailments, Neem oil is packed with a ton of antioxidants that help to treat most scalp conditions according to my research. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Neem oil is one of the most effective oils when it comes to growing hair. It helps tremendously with hair thinning when applied daily, which will in turn thicken the hair. Neem oil helps to reduce dandruff, helps reduce the growth of grey hairs, helps to treat scalp infections and it has anti- fungal properties. Use it cold pressed and diluted in your favorite carrier.

How to use: Dilute 50/50 with your favorite carrier oil, for example Sweet Almond Oil. Leave on for 30 minutes and wash out with mild shampoo.

Bhringraj Oil: A phenomenal oil that is so interesting because it helps to increase blood circulation to the scalp and roots, which will in turn, promote hair growth. It is said that Bhringraj oil helps to strengthen the hair, reduce greying and reduce dandruff. It is very effective at fighting off fungal infections on the scalp, due to its antifungal properties. I thought it was also very interesting to learn that this oil helps to promote a calm mind and it is known as the soothing oil because of its cooling effects on the scalp. This literally makes for the perfect scalp massage oil. When you use Bhringraj oil, be sure to use the organic version to receive the benefits. This oil will be perfect for a hot oil treatment as well, since it promotes tranquility and calmness. What better way to start off your wash day or add to it!

How to use: Massage directly into scalp and leave on for 30 minutes. For best results apply heat. Massage into scalp for 15 minutes and let sit for 30 minutes.

Organic Sesame Seed Oil: Considered to be one of the oldest oils to be used since the beginning of time, Organic Sesame Seed Oil is popular for its soothing effects on the scalp. It is also an emollient, which means it does a great job of smoothing the hair strands and combating dry scalp. It is said that this oil can also aid in repairing heat damage and helps to protect the hair from harmful UV rays. Use it at 100% organic and of course, cold pressed.

How to use: Warm the oil for best results and apply on hair and scalp from root to tip. Leave on for 20 minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo.

Amla Oil: A powerhouse of an oil, Amla oil is highly beneficial at stimulating hair growth. It is said that this particular oil strengthens the hair from root to tip. This is the go-to oil for those that suffer from alopecia, as it is rich in Vitamin C, E and many antioxidants which aide in the circulation of blood to the scalp. Amla oil is ideal for those that are suffering from hair loss, due to its ability to promote cellular regeneration. Amla oil is anti-inflammatory, prevents hair loss and promotes hair growth, all while providing great moisture to the hair and scalp.

How to use: Often used in place of a rinse out conditioner, can also be used as a hot oil treatment. Massage into scalp, apply heat and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Rinse out or shampoo out with mild shampoo.

Are there any ayurvedic products I can purchase that are already on the market? If you’re not a DIY’er like myself, there are products on the market that can help you build your ayurvedic hair regimen without all the hassle.

Here’s a list you can refer to and get started:

  • Camille Rose Naturals Cocoa Nibs Growth Serum
  • Curls Blueberry Bliss Hair Growth Oil
  • Meraki Glow Oil
  • Curls & Potions Angel’s Miracle Growth Serum
  • Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil
  • Soultanicals Afrotastic Curl Elastic Deep Conditioning Treatment
  • Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil

There you have it! Ayurveda incorporates many other elements that can help to grow the hair and maintain a healthy PH balance on the scalp, but I wanted to focus just on oils for this segment as it can become pretty overwhelming with all the natural ingredients out there.

Comment if you have used any ayurvedic remedies in your own hair care regimen or if you would like to learn about more ways to incorporate ayurvedic practices in your natural hair regimen!
